Cirneco dell’Etna

History and Background

Cirneco dell’Etna is an ancient dog breed originating in Sicily, Italy, particularly in the area of Mount Etna, the volcano. The breed was used for centuries for hunting hares and small animals in mountainous and isolated areas, thanks to its speed, keen sense of smell, and its ability to persevere in harsh conditions. It is considered one of the oldest breeds that have survived to this day almost without significant genetic change.
The Cirneco is known for its slender and athletic appearance, reminiscent of the sighthound breeds, and for its sociable and loyal character.

The Breed's Purpose Today

Today, the Cirneco serves mainly as a companion dog for active families and as a loving and loyal pet. Despite its relatively small size, it continues to be an excellent working dog and participates in canine sports competitions such as agility. The breed is especially suited to owners who love spending time in nature, and it is able to adapt itself to life in a small home as well, provided it is given enough physical activity.

Tips for Training and Educating the Breed

  • Patience and consistency: Due to its independent character, it is important to maintain a patient and structured approach during training.
  • Positive reinforcement: The Cirneco responds well to praise, treats, and play during training.
  • Daily physical activity: Long walks, running, and active play are a must to maintain its health and balance.
  • Early socialization: Exposure to dogs, people, and new environments will help reduce fearfulness or territorial behavior.
  • Making use of the sense of smell: Scent-detection games or tasks that require searching will contribute to the dog’s mental and physical stimulation.
