Cairn Terrier
History and Background
Cairn Terrier is a small dog breed originating in Scotland, where it served as a working dog for hunting rodents and foxes. Its name is derived from the Scottish word “Cairn,” meaning a pile of stones, since the breed was skilled at searching for pests that hid under stones in agricultural fields. The Cairn Terrier is considered one of the oldest terriers, and its energetic and lively character made it a popular dog among farmers. The breed also became famous in films, especially thanks to its appearance as an icon in the film “The Wizard of Oz,” where it played Toto.

The Breed's Purpose Today
Today, the Cairn Terrier serves mainly as a family pet thanks to its friendly, loyal, and sociable character. The breed is suited to families with children and loves to take part in family activities, especially if they include play time or outdoor walks. In addition, it remains true to its roots as a rodent hunter, so it can also be effective on farms.
