American Akita

History and Background

The American Akita is a large and impressive dog breed originating in Japan. During the 17th century, the Akita was developed in the Akita prefecture of northern Japan as a hunting dog for large animals such as bears and wild boar. During the 19th century, Akita dogs were crossed with breeds such as the Tosa Inu and the Mastiff, which led to an increase in their size and changes in body structure. After the Second World War, American soldiers stationed in Japan brought Akita dogs with them to the United States, where a separate breeding line developed that is now known as the “American Akita.” The American breed differs from the Japanese Akita in its more massive body structure and a wider range of coat colors.
