Hokkaido
History and Background
The Hokkaido is an ancient Japanese dog breed originating on Hokkaido Island in northern Japan. The breed was developed by the local Ainu people, who used it to hunt large animals such as bears, as well as a guard dog. Thanks to its endurance in the island’s harsh weather conditions, the Hokkaido became a loyal and effective companion. In 1937 the breed was declared a natural monument in Japan, and since then it has been carefully preserved.
