Pekingese
History and Background
Pekingese is a small and regal dog breed originating in China, where it served as a companion dog to the emperors’ families for centuries. This breed was considered a sacred animal and was carefully guarded within the royal courts of Beijing, and was permitted to be kept only by nobles and emperors. According to legend, the Pekingese was created when a lion fell in love with a monkey and asked to become smaller in order to be with his beloved, which explains its distinctive appearance. The breed arrived in Europe in the mid-19th century after the conquest of the imperial palace in Beijing, and soon gained appreciation as a royal companion in the Western world as well

The Breed's Purpose Today
Today, the Pekingese serves mainly as an endearing and loyal companion dog. Its independent character, together with the deep bond it forms with its owner, makes it an ideal pet for families or individuals looking for a small and calm dog. The breed is more suited to life in the home than to prolonged outdoor activities, but it requires a great deal of attention and love.
Tips for Training and Educating the Breed
- Patience and consistency: Due to its independent and stubborn character, it is important to maintain a consistent and patient approach in the training process.
- Positive reinforcement: The Pekingese responds well to praise and treats, which can help in the learning process.
- Handling hot weather: The breed is sensitive to heat, so outdoor activity should be avoided on hot days and a cool place provided.
- Coat care: Its long coat should be brushed regularly to prevent tangles and maintain its well-groomed appearance.
- Early socialization: Early exposure to people and other dogs will help it be more relaxed and sociable.
