Otitis (Ear Infection)

Otitis (Otitis Externa) is an inflammation of the external ear canal, and is one of the most common diseases in dogs. The disease is often caused by bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections such as ear mites. Additional causes include allergies, accumulation of wax or foreign bodies in the ear canal. Breeds with floppy ears or a narrow ear canal, such as Cocker Spaniel and Labrador Retriever, are more prone to developing chronic ear infections.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

The symptoms of otitis include intense itching in the ears, frequent head shaking, foul-smelling discharge from the ear, redness and swelling of the ear canal, and pain to the touch. In more severe cases, dogs may show signs of loss of balance or head tilt. The disease is diagnosed by a veterinarian through a physical examination of the ear and laboratory tests to assess the type of infection (bacterial, fungal or parasitic).

Possible Complications

Without appropriate treatment, otitis may become chronic and cause irreversible damage to the ear canal and the eardrum. In severe cases, the inflammation may spread to the middle and inner ear, and lead to hearing loss, nerve damage and neurological complications.

Treatment

The treatment of otitis includes a thorough cleaning of the ear canal and administering medications according to the cause of the disease. The treatment may include antibiotics, antifungal medications or anti-inflammatory preparations to relieve the pain and swelling. In cases of a severe or chronic infection, the veterinarian may recommend prolonged treatment and ongoing follow-up.

Prevention

Preventing otitis includes maintaining ear hygiene and periodic examinations at the veterinarian, especially in dogs with a tendency to develop ear infections. It is important to avoid over-cleaning the ears and to use only preparations recommended by the veterinarian. In addition, it is recommended to check the dog's ears after walks and to make sure there are no foreign bodies in the canal.

Otitis is a very common problem in dogs, but through appropriate treatment and ongoing follow-up, complications can be prevented and ear health maintained. Dog owners should be alert to early symptoms and seek veterinary advice in the event of a suspected inflammation.
