Support and Therapy Dogs

Emotional support and therapy dogs are loyal companions intended to provide emotional and social support to people coping with emotional, mental, or physical challenges. Their role is to reduce feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression, and to improve the patients’ quality of life. These dogs are not required to perform complex physical tasks, but rather to provide a calming and loving presence that can foster a sense of security and peace of mind. They are integrated into psychological therapy, encouragement visits to hospitals, special educational settings, and more, and they contribute to improving the social and emotional connections of the patients.
The training process for emotional support and therapy dogs focuses on the temperament and ability of the dog to communicate in a calm and pleasant manner with people. Training begins with selecting dogs with a friendly and stable temperament, capable of adapting to different situations and remaining calm in environments full of stimuli. The dogs learn to respond to basic commands and to maintain concentration during their time with patients. In addition, they undergo exercises that enable them to cope with unexpected behaviors, such as crying or sudden movements, and to respond in a calming way. Training is carried out under controlled conditions, using positive reinforcement and testing the dog’s responses in real situations, such as hospital visits or group meetings. Emotional support dogs are not required to undergo formal medical training, but the selection and training process is careful to ensure their suitability for their purposes.
Emotional support and therapy dogs are usually selected from breeds known for their calm, sociable temperament and their adaptability to diverse situations. Breeds such as the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are among the leaders in this field. The Labrador and Golden Retriever are characterized by their sociable temperament and their ability to cope with complex environments, while the Cavalier stands out for its small size and its warm, loving temperament suited to working with children or people with special needs. Additional breeds such as the Poodle and Maltese are also used as support dogs, according to the needs of the patients and the operating environments. Beyond the breed, the suitability of the dog depends mainly on its temperament and its ability to communicate with people in an empathetic and sensitive manner.
