History and Background
The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient Italian breed originating in the Romagna region of northern Italy. Its name derives from the word “lagotto”, meaning “lake dog” in Italian, and from the word “romagnolo”, referring to the Romagna region. Originally, it served as a water dog for hunting waterfowl in marshes and lakes. With the draining of the marshes in the 19th century, the breed was adapted for finding truffles, thanks to its developed sense of smell. Today, the Lagotto Romagnolo is the only breed recognized as a truffle-hunting dog.
