The Azawakh is an ancient dog breed originating in the Sahel region of West Africa, particularly in countries such as Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. Its name derives from the “Azawakh Valley” region in the Sahara Desert, where it served as a companion and guard dog for the nomadic Tuareg tribes. The breed is known for its speed and agility, which enabled it to hunt antelope and other small animals, as well as for being a loyal guardian of its owner’s camp. The Azawakh is one of the few breeds perfectly adapted to the hot, dry climate of the desert.

The Breed's Purpose Today
Today, the Azawakh serves mainly as a companion dog and family companion, primarily for families with experience in raising dogs. The Azawakh still retains its instincts as a hunter, but it is less common as a working dog outside its region of origin. Because of its protective nature, it is also suited to serving as a guard dog for the family.
