The Basenji is a hunting dog breed originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in central Africa. The breed was used by locals for hunting and for driving small game into hunters’ nets, as well as for controlling rodent populations in villages. The Basenji is considered one of the oldest breeds, and its primitive features have been preserved over the generations. The breed was first discovered by Europeans in 1895 in the Congo, where it was appreciated for its intelligence, speed, and silence. The name “Basenji” derives from the word “basɛ́nzi” in the Lingala language, meaning “the dogs of the villagers.”
