Leonberger
History and Background
The Leonberger is a large breed originating in the town of Leonberg in Germany. The breed was developed in the mid-19th century by Heinrich Essig, who combined the Saint Bernard, Newfoundland and Great Pyrenees breeds, with the aim of creating a dog resembling a lion – the symbol of the town of Leonberg. The Leonberger gained popularity among European royalty, including Napoleon III and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. During the World Wars, the breed was nearly wiped out, but was saved thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts who restored its population.
