Collar, Harness or Leash? The Professional Guide to Choosing the Right Walking Equipment for Your Dog

For every dog, the moment the owner reaches for the equipment and says the word “walk” is the peak moment of the day. Going out to the street is its opportunity to explore the world, sniff, meet friends and release energy. But beyond the social and fun aspect, walking in the modern environment requires from us, the owners, supreme responsibility for keeping it and those around it safe.

The dog accessories market is flooded today with thousands of different brands and products, and many dog owners find themselves completely confused by the abundance: Is it better to buy a chest harness? Does a collar harm the neck? And which leash will help stop the exhausting pulling? It’s important to understand that the equipment you choose isn’t just a means of restraint – it’s the physical channel of communication between you and the dog. The equipment directly affects the dog’s physical health, its level of arousal and stress during the walk, and your ability to manage changing situations in the street.

The anatomical and behavioral differences in choosing the equipment

To sort out the mess and help you choose correctly, let’s break down the three main categories of walking equipment and understand their effect on the dog’s body and mind:

Dog collars: The classic collar is the most common equipment, and it’s excellent for dogs that have already gone through a training process, know how to walk calmly with a slack leash, and are able to listen to the owner even in the face of stimuli. The collar serves first and foremost to carry name and ID tags. At the same time, for dogs that tend to pull with force, reactive dogs or dogs with a delicate neck structure (such as sighthounds or puppies), constant and strong pressure on the throat area is very dangerous. It may cause severe physiological damage in the long term – from a collapse of the windpipe, a dangerous rise in intraocular pressure, damage to the thyroid gland, to severe nerve damage in the neck vertebrae that directly affects the dog’s behavior.

Dog harnesses: The harness moves the pressure point from the sensitive neck area toward the chest, back and shoulder-blade area, which are much stronger and more stable areas. A harness is especially recommended for puppies at the start of their journey, for small and sensitive dogs, and for dogs that suffer from breathing problems. That said, not all harnesses are created equal. It’s critical to choose an anatomical harness (in a Y shape) that sits correctly on the chest and doesn’t block the natural range of motion of the shoulder joint. Harnesses with a horizontal, crosswise strap (such as “Norwegian” harnesses) restrict movement and change the dog’s walking posture over time.

Dog leashes: The leash is the line for conveying messages between you and the dog. Leashes of a classic fixed length (between 1.8 and 2 meters) are the perfect solution for controlled, safe and close walking on the crowded city streets. On the other hand, long training leashes (5 to 15 meters) are intended for release and scenting walks (Decompression Walks); they give the dog a wide freedom of movement and allow it to sniff and reduce stress safely in open areas. The sweeping professional recommendation is to avoid retractable (flexi) leashes entirely; these leashes create constant tension on the dog’s neck and activate its natural “opposition reflex”. They actually teach the dog a mistaken and training-destructive perception: that in order to move forward and explore the environment, it has to pull.
