Gastric Torsion (Bloat)

Gastric torsion, also known as Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus Syndrome (GDV), is a severe medical emergency in which the stomach fills with gas and fluids and twists around its axis. This process blocks the passage from the stomach to the small intestine and the flow of blood to vital organs. Gastric torsion is especially common in large-breed dogs with a deep chest, such as Great Dane, Rottweiler and German Shepherd. Without immediate treatment, the condition can be fatal.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

The symptoms of gastric torsion appear rapidly and include marked distension of the abdomen, discomfort, repeated unsuccessful attempts to vomit, excessive drooling, restlessness and a sharp decline in mood. The dog may exhibit rapid breathing and an accelerated pulse. Gastric torsion is diagnosed by a veterinarian, mainly through a physical examination and an X-ray showing the dilation of the stomach and its twisting.

Possible Complications

Gastric torsion can cause severe complications such as necrosis of the stomach wall due to lack of blood flow, rupture of the stomach, impaired heart and lung function, and life-threatening shock. Without urgent medical intervention, the chance of death is very high.

Treatment

The treatment of gastric torsion requires emergency surgery to return the stomach to its place and sometimes also to fix it in place to prevent recurrence of the condition. Before the surgery, the dog will receive supportive treatment including intravenous fluids, painkillers and stabilization of the general condition. In severe cases, it may be necessary to remove necrotic parts of the stomach or to treat ruptures.

Prevention

The risk of gastric torsion can be reduced by feeding the dog smaller portions throughout the day instead of one large meal, avoiding strenuous physical activity immediately after a meal, and considering a preventive surgical procedure to fix the stomach (gastropexy) in dogs that are in a high-risk group.

Gastric torsion is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate medical intervention. Rapid diagnosis and proper treatment can save the dog’s life and prevent severe complications. Awareness among owners of dogs of at-risk breeds and adopting appropriate feeding habits can reduce the chance of the condition developing and improve the dogs’ quality of life.
