Puppy Training and Education: Where Do You Start?
- Background
A puppy is without a doubt the sweetest thing there is, but – it also requires work and above all patience, persistence and love. Here’s everything you should know about puppy training and education.
- Explanation
1. Start with consistency and calm
Your puppy sees you as its source of security. Therefore, it’s important to begin every training session in a calm and clear manner. Every command, every game and every reinforcement should be consistent – don’t change the rules from one day to the next. For example, if today you let the puppy jump on the couch, it will learn that it’s allowed and tomorrow it will keep doing it, and the confusion will cause frustration. Dog training begins with an understanding of this principle: consistency creates security, and security enables better learning.
2. Build an orderly routine
A clear routine is a tremendous tool in puppy education. Regularity in meals, sleep hours, walks and games helps the puppy understand what is expected of it at any moment. For example, if you always give it its meal at a fixed time and take it for a walk after the meal, it will learn to wait patiently and will develop self-control skills. A routine also helps prevent problems such as chewed-up items in the house, unnecessary barking or separation anxiety.
3. Positive reinforcement
One of the most effective techniques in dog training is positive reinforcement. Instead of focusing on what the puppy is doing wrong, give it immediate reinforcement for the desired behavior. This can be a compliment, a pat or a small treat – anything that strengthens the connection between the action and the pleasant outcome. This way, the puppy will quickly learn which behaviors are desirable and how to conduct itself in your world.

4. Practical stages in daily training
To turn theory into practice, you can divide the puppy’s training into several clear daily stages:
- Morning: a short learning session with basic commands such as “Sit” and “Come”, followed by a first walk accompanied by a reinforcement game.
- Midday: small games at home that challenge the brain, such as puzzles or food toys.
- Evening: calm reinforcements – petting, compliments, and practicing short commands before bedtime.
